Kurdistan Islamic Union: We reject the use of the judiciary in Kurdistan to punish activists

The Kurdistan Islamic Union affirmed its refusal to use the judicial authority in the Kurdistan region to punish opposition activists.

A spokesman for the Kurdistan Islamic Union said on Friday, "Unfortunately, once again, the judiciary in Erbil issued a four-year prison sentence against an activist while we were awaiting his release."

Added, "We in the Kurdistan Islamic Union consider re-issuing the prison sentence and detention as a use of the judicial authorities for political purposes and the silencing of dissenting voices."

Stressed that "this work puts the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary under question."

"The authorities and the judiciary must work to correct mistakes, not the other way around," he demanded.

"We believe that the judiciary's use of political revenge weakens the region's standing, makes it lose confidence more and more, and results in social chaos," he said.
