Salahaddin Mohammed Bahaaddin, Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) met today Wednesday, 25 May 2022 with Jennifer Plaschardt, UN Special Representative for Iraq.
Secretary-General of the KIU said: We as the KIU, look with gratitude and respect for the efforts of the United Nations, especially in its latest report to the UN Security Council and previously presented the threats to the political process in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq was the main topic of the meeting between the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the UN Special Representative.
Salahaddin Mohammed Bahaaddin considered the political situation in Iraq dangerous, according to the constitutional deadlines, the issue of the presidency and the prime minister has not been resolved. He also said that only political dialogue and national consensus can open this complicated knot in the governance process.
In another part of his speech, he said that the Kurdistan Region and its citizens are not excluded from the negative impact of governance crises, we believe that holding clean and transparent elections is a guarantee of progress in the political process in the region.
The United Nations can play an active and positive role. Clean and fair elections will restore hope to the citizens towards the political process in the region.
In his speech, the Secretary-General of the KIU said that the highest interests of Kurdistan citizens must come before any other political interests.
Plaschardt expressed her pleasure at the visit and stressed that the UN considers political dialogue as the solution to break the political deadlock.
They also said that they are going to meet closely with the main parties in the Kurdistan Region and discuss the solution of political issues together.
